Camp Counsellor Assistant in High Park

Assist our camp counsellors in delivering nature camp programs for children of different ages in High Park.

Camp Counsellor Assistant in High Park

Camp Counsellor Assistants will aid our staff camp counsellors to facilitate our nature-based camp programs for children ages 4-12 years. Our camps allow children the opportunity to explore the park through promoting awareness and respect for nature through hands-on outdoor nature education and park stewardship.

2023-24 Position Details

  • Opportunity type: In-person (multiple positions open)
  • Age Groups
    • Kinder Camp (4-6 years)
    • Junior Camp (6-8 years)
    • Senior Camp (9-12 years)
  • Commitment: 7.5 hours for each day of PA Day Camp and Winter Holiday Camp. Preferably for the entire week of Winter Holiday Camp and at least three days of PA Day Camps (October 6, November 17, December 8, January 19, February 16, April 19, June 7)
  • Age requirements: 15 years of age or older
  • Location: High Park Nature Centre, 375 Colborne Lodge Drive

What you’ll be doing

Please see our camp pages for camp schedules and age group descriptions:

  • Assisting staff to deliver outdoor nature interpretation programs and activities for campers aged 4 to 12 years old;
  • Role modeling respect and appreciation for the natural world;
  • Supervision of children during lunch and free time;
  • Aiding with set up and clean up before and after the program.

What we are looking for

  • Previous experience or an interest in working with children ages 4 to 12 years in an educational/recreational setting;
  • Enthusiasm!
  • Excellent oral communication skills and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to climb steep slopes and walk rugged terrain;
  • Ability to be outside in all weather conditions (e.g. rain, sunshine, extreme heat);
  • Dedication to and understanding of environmental issues;
  • Nature interpretation skills, knowledge of local ecology is a strong asset;
  • Must be 15 years of age or older;
  • Valid police record check for individuals 18 years and older.


Please note: Some of our programs may be physically demanding including lifting/carrying programs materials up to 30lbs, longer hikes on uneven terrain, sitting/standing/running for extended periods of time, etc. If you require physical accommodations, please reach out to us.

What we provide you

  • Mandatory virtual and in-person orientation/training session prior to the start of your volunteering;
  • An opportunity to learn from and shadow Outdoor Educators;
  • An opportunity to learn about the ecology of High Park;

  • Completion of high school volunteer hours;

  • Police record check reimbursement after 10 hours of volunteering.

Commitment

These positions require a commitment of approximately 7.5 hours for each day of Winter Holiday Camp or PA Day Camp. Shifts will last from 8:30AM-4:30PM each day, with a 30-minute lunch break between 12-1PM. We prefer volunteers who can commit for the whole week of Winter Holiday Camp or at least three days of PA Day Camp.

Winter Holiday Camp will run from January 2-5.

PA Day Camps will run on the following days:

  • Friday, October 6
  • Friday, November 17
  • Friday, December 8
  • Friday, January 19
  • Friday, February 16
  • Friday, April 19
  • Friday, June 7


New volunteers must also commit to attending an hour-long, in-person orientation and complete a virtual training module (completion time ≈ one hour). We will notify you about the dates our in-person orientation sessions will take place.
