Do you love reading about the natural world and talking with others about your nature passion? Are you interested in nature focused books - no matter whether fiction or non-fiction? Do you like to hear about new publications on natural history, fascinating research on nature and ecology or any nature related books whether for adults or children, scientists or lay people? If yes, join our Nature Book Club for adults! You will get to know a most amazing collection of interesting books and authors.
The Nature Book Club meets once a month virtually (on Zoom) with two in-person gatherings in High Park per year.
Each month, a theme (such as for example bees, water, birds, art & nature) will be selected for the next month and book club participants read a book of their choice on the topic and introduce it to the book club. People present their books in a casual chat, retell what they found most interesting or informative, show pictures if there are any, provide the year of publication, some information about the author and how they liked it. Each book presentation lasts around 5-10 min after which fellow members can ask questions and share thoughts.
Book club runs September - June and meets a total of nine times on the last Tuesday of each month (except December).
Meeting dates include:
The cost for joining one season of the book club is $15 for Nature Centre volunteers and seniors (65 years+) or $30 for individuals (19 to 64 years old). This is paid as a ‘Friends of the High Park Nature Centre‘ membership fee.
Please click the "Request to Join" button at the top of this page to indicate your interest in joining the Nature Book Club, and fill out the form.
Registration opens on Monday, September 12 at noon. But you can register at any time during the year. If no spots are available at the time, you will be placed on a waitlist and will be informed as soon as spots open up.
Once you are registered, you will receive instructions on how to pay your membership fee. After your donation is made, your participation in the Book Club program will be confirmed.
The first book club meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 27 on Zoom and you can bring a nature-related book of your own choice. A connection to High Park or any of its species is welcome, but not at all required. The October theme will likely be books about turtles.
Book themes for the following month are decided at the end of each book club meeting. A connection to High Park or any of its species is nice but not required. For September, bring a nature-related book of your own choice. The October theme will likely be turtles.
The themes during the 2021-22 book club season were:
If you wish to withdraw your participation in the book club, your ‘Friends of the High Park Nature Centre’ membership fee will not be refunded as the fee is a donation to the Nature Centre. Your membership will remain valid for one year.
Please note that if you miss two consecutive meetings without notice and cannot be reached via email or phone to confirm attendance to the remaining meetings, the next person on the waitlist will be contacted to take your place in the book club.
