Staff Spotlight: Julie Read
April 26, 2018 by Julie Read

Welcome to Staff Spotlight! Here we highlight the diverse stories of our valuable staff!

Julie, our Education Coordinator for Community Programs, has been with us since 2013 in various roles!

I grew up in a forest outside of London, ON with naturalist parents, so my childhood is full of nature memories. Some of my favourites are of going birding in Point Pelee during spring bird migration! Fast forward to the present day, I am passionate about helping people deepen their connection to the natural world so that they will value the earth and want to protect it.

I studied Creative Writing and Social and Political Thought at York University, then completed a Bachelor of Education degree at the University of Toronto with an emphasis on social justice education and working with inner city children. I was then coordinator of “The Nook” (a free, social justice program in Toronto), and worked in a Waldorf kindergarten classroom in Glasgow.

When I moved into the High Park neighbourhood I got involved with the Nature Centre because I wanted to reconnect with nature myself. I began volunteering in 2013, and since then I’ve been a part-time Nature Interpreter, full-time Naturalist Teacher, and I am currently the full-time Education Coordinator for Community Programs. I teach people of all ages and coordinate our Nature Clubs, Family Nature Walks, and Special Events.

I love babies, so seeing great horned owlets in the park or a watching a downy woodpecker feed her babies in their nest cavity are two of my favourite High Park memories. I also saw baby minks with a summer camp group one year which inspired us to form a synchronized swimming troupe called “The Marvellous Minks”!
