Welcome to Word of the Week! Stay tuned for a new word each Wednesday to amp up your nature vocabulary!
Mycorrhizal [mahy-kuh-rahy-zuh] (noun):
A type of fungus that has a mutually beneficial relationship (also called a symbiotic relationship) with the roots of plants. Mycorrhizal fungi grows inside or surrounds the roots of plant which allows for the exchange and movement of nutrients, water and even communication between plants.
At High Park, we might not see Mycorrhizal fungi in action, but underneath our feet a web of Mycelium at work!
