Another important factor to keep in mind is that Downy Woodpeckers are much more abundant than Hairy Woodpeckers, especially in suburban areas. Hairy Woodpeckers prefer towering trees and deeper woods, while the Downy Woodpecker can settle for younger trees and herbaceous plants.
