Welcome to Word of the Week! Stay tuned for a new word each Friday to amp up your nature vocabulary!
Word of the week is Peiskos [Pahys-ko s] (noun): The feeling you get when you sit in front of a fire and enjoy its warmth.
This fun word is Norwegian in origin and refers more specifically to the feeling of warmth we get when we are around an indoor fire (e.g. fireplace), however who says that we do not get the same feeling when sitting around an outdoor fire?
When humans gained a certain amount of control over fire, more than a million years ago, this led to some major changes in our bodies and how we spent our time and how we lived. In other words, it completely changed the way in which we connect and interact with the land and with each other. Even to this day, many of us can think of a time or memory where we worked with fire or sat around a fire.
Because fire is such an important way of connecting to the land, the High Park Nature Centre is offering “Fire Skills & Storytelling” all year as part of the NEW Teambuilding Programs for youth and adults. In addition to this, adults can also look forward to the NEW Adult Pop-up events this winter, which may include Fire Skills and/or Snowshoeing. Since these are pop-up events, you’ll have to keep a close eye on our social media and website to find out exact dates, times, and themes.
