Word of the Week: Florescence
May 06, 2022 by High Park Nature Centre

Welcome to Word of the Week! Stay tuned for a new word each week to amp up your nature vocabulary!

The word of the week is florescence [FLAW-RES-UHNS] (noun): a fancy term to describe the act, state, or period of flowering, flourishing or bloom.

Sometime in the 18th century, botanists picked florescence from the Latin word florescentia as a showy word to refer to the blooming of a flower. The term can also be used to describe something thriving and flourishing, like the florescence of an art form.

Another term with a similar meaning is effloresence, which refers to the state or period of flowering. Inflorescence, however, refers to the arrangement of a cluster of flowers on a plant.

What better way to celebrate the florescent springtime and cherry blossom season than by adding this word to your lexicon. You could also use it to describe the florescence in your own lives.
