Nature Book Club

Explore your interests and connect with fellow readers at our Nature Book Club in High Park.

Do you love reading about the natural world and talking with others about your nature passion? Are you interested in nature-focused books — fiction or non-fiction? Do you like to hear about new publications on natural history, fascinating research on nature and ecology, or any nature-related books whether for adults or children, scientists or beginners? If yes, join our Nature Book Club for adults! You will explore an amazing collection of books and authors, and meet other curious nature bookworms.

The Nature Book Club meets once a month virtually via Zoom with three in-person sessions in High Park this year (September 2023, February 2024, June 2024)

Each month, a nature-related theme (such as bees, water, birds, art in nature, etc.) will be selected by book club members for the next month. Book club participants read a book of their choice on the topic and introduce it to the book club during our meetings. People present their books in a casual chat, retell what they found most interesting or informative, show pictures if there are any, provide the year of publication, some information about the author, and how they liked it. Each book presentation lasts around 5-10 minutes after which fellow members can ask questions and share thoughts.

Book club runs from September – June and meets nine times, generally on the last Tuesday of each month (except December).

  • In-person: Participants meet for in-person, outdoor sessions in High Park between 6:30-8:30PM on the following days — September 26, February 27, June 25. We’ll enjoy a fire, connect with High Park and with each other. Light refreshments will be provided.
  • Virtual: Participants meet on Zoom from 7-8:30PM on the following days — October 24, November 28, January 30, March 26, April 30, May 28.

The cost for joining one season of the book club is $15 for Nature Centre volunteers and seniors (65 years+) or $30 for individuals (19 to 64 years old). This is paid as part of our ‘Friends of High Park‘ membership fee.

Please click the “Request to Join” button at the top of this page to indicate your interest in joining the Nature Book Club and fill out the form.

Pre-registration for previous nature book club participants opens Monday, August 28. General registration for all other participants opens Tuesday, September 5. If no spots are available at the time, you will be placed on a waitlist and will be informed as soon as spots open up.

Once you are registered, you will receive instructions on how to pay your membership fee. After your donation is made, your participation in the Book Club program will be confirmed. Participants are required to have active memberships through our Friends of High Park membership program.

The first book club meeting will take place on Tuesday, September 26, in-person in High Park, and you can bring a nature-related book of your own choice. A connection to High Park or any of its species is welcome but not at all required.

Book themes for the following month are decided at the end of our first book club meeting. A connection to High Park or any of its species is nice but not required. For September, bring a nature-related book of your own choice.

If you wish to withdraw your participation in the book club, your ‘Friends of High Park’ membership fee will not be refunded as the fee is a donation to the Nature Centre. Your membership will remain valid for one year.

Please note that if you miss two consecutive meetings without notice and cannot be reached via email or phone to confirm attendance at the remaining meetings, the next person on the waitlist will be contacted to take your place in the book club. Please contact us if you have any questions.
