Summer Camp Counsellor Assistant in High Park

Summer 2024 Camp Counsellor Assistant

Summer Camp Counsellor Assistants will be paired with a staff member and a group of children between the ages of 4–13 years old during the summer to enhance the camp experience for kids. Our summer camp offers children the opportunity to explore the park while promoting awareness and respect for nature through hands-on outdoor nature education and park stewardship.

Position details

  • Opportunity type: In person (multiple positions open)
  • Age Groups:
    • Leafhoppers (4-5 years)
    • Cicadas (6-7 years)
    • Dragonflies (8-10 years)
    • Mantids (11-13 years)
  • Commitment: Minimum one full week commitment
  • Shifts: Monday to Friday, 8:30AM – 4:30PM
  • Age requirements: 15 years of age or older
  • Location: High Park Nature Centre, 375 Colborne Lodge Drive

What you’ll be doing

  • Role model respect and appreciation for the natural world;
  • Contribute to program delivery within your comfort level and ability;
  • Encourage participation in games and activities;
  • Supervise children during lunch and free time;
  • Supervise children during swim time;
  • Help maintain the cleanliness of the Nature Centre;
  • Attend mandatory orientation/training session prior to the start of camp.

What we are looking for

  • Enthusiasm!;
  • Ability and/or desire to connect with kids;
  • Desire to learn about and connect with nature;
  • Ability to be outside in all weather conditions (e.g. rain, sunshine, extreme heat);
  • Ability to commit to one full week of camp Monday-Friday;
  • Must be 15 years of age or older;
  • Valid police record check for individuals 18 years and older.
 
Please note: Some of our programs may be physically demanding including lifting/carrying programs materials up to 30lbs, longer hikes on uneven terrain, sitting/standing/running for extended periods of time, etc. If you require physical accommodations, please reach out to us.

What we provide you

  • Orientation session prior to the start of camp;
  • Invitation to complete your police record check through mybackcheck.com and reimbursement after 10 hours of volunteering (for volunteers ages 18 years and older);
  • Completion of high school volunteer hours;
  • Reference letter upon request;

  • An opportunity to learn about the ecology of High Park;
  • An I 💚 High Park t-shirt after 35 hours of volunteering;

Commitment

These positions require a week-long, Monday to Friday commitment from 8:30AM to 4:30PM (37.5 hours). Volunteers who can commit to a full week of camp are preferred.

New volunteers must also commit to attending an hour-long, in-person orientation and complete a virtual training module (completion time ≈ one hour). Volunteer orientation sessions for the Summer 2024 season will typically take place on Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons, pending availability and demand.
