Word of the Week: Mnemonic

Like what you see? Share this post

Welcome to Word of the Week! Stay tuned for a new word each week to amp up your nature vocabulary!

Word of the week is Mnemonic [NUH + MAA + NIK] (noun): a word, sentence, poem, etc. that helps you to remember something.

While mnemonics are used to assist with remembering a wide variety of things, they are a useful tool when it comes to memorizing nature sounds. Birdwatchers, for instance, use a wide range of mnemonics to keep track of bird sounds. Some popular mnemonics for bird sounds include “Honk! Honk!” for geese and “Caw! Caw!” for crows.

What do you think this cardinal pictured above sounds like? Flex your thinking muscles and come up with some creative mnemonics for the birds you encounter!
