The word of the week is stamen [stay-muhn] (noun): the pollen producing reproductive organ of a flower.

As the petals of cherry blossom flowers fall off after peak bloom, the stamens and other parts of the flowers become much more visible. The stamen typically consists of the thread-like stalk called filament and the head of the stamen called anther, which is responsible for producing pollen. The stamens in a flower are collectively called the androecium. The diagram below shows the parts of a flower and its stamen.
